The SmartBooks initiative aims to enhance reading proficiency among young Cambodian children in grades 2 and 3. By implementing a technology-based approach, it provides basal electronic readers designed to foster confidence through tailored reading experiences, moving away from a uniform educational model.

These e-readers incorporate digital quizzes and assessment exercises, which can improve both the efficiency and validity of teacher evaluations. The components of SmartBooks not only present individual innovations but also create a synergy that can be transformative for early literacy education. For instance, the introduction of basal readers allows for differentiated reading instruction tailored to each child’s ability, while the electronic format facilitates interactive features and streamlined digital testing.

Noteworthy features of SmartBooks include audio narration, sound effects, and animations, which aid young learners in decoding unfamiliar words and enhancing comprehension. These interactive elements make reading more engaging, thereby increasing motivation and alleviating the anxiety often associated with traditional print reading tasks. Additionally, self-help features such as word definitions and pronunciation guides empower children to seek information independently, reducing reluctance to ask questions in class.

In essence, SmartBooks serve as electronic textbooks aligned with Ministry-approved content for grades 2 and 3, segmented into three distinct reading levels. Developed by Kampuchean Action for Primary Education (KAPE), the implementation of a readability analysis technique for Khmer text allows students to progress based on their individual reading proficiency. The readers feature interactive elements, multi-sensory learning experiences, animations, and electronic assessments at the conclusion of each unit. Developed in close collaboration with the Department of Curriculum Development, SmartBooks aim to foster personalized learning through technology, reviving the concept of basal readers to better match children's reading levels while facilitating rigorous assessments of reading acquisition—even in underserved rural areas.
